Salvation Army Working 'Round the Clock In Midwest Flood Relief Efforts

(June 18, 2008) As historic flooding continues to plague the Midwest Salvation Army emergency disaster services (EDS) teams are responding in flood-affected communities across Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin.
EDS personnel are bringing comfort and relief to emergency responders and residents after storms devastated 30 counties in southeastern Wisconsin. More than 15,000 flood clean-up kits have been distributed in 15 counties and The Salvation Army is working ‘round-the-clock with emergency officials to identify additional areas in need of support.
Flooding also has impacted communities in southern Illinois and Missouri. The Salvation Army is responding in Adams, Clark and Lawrence counties in Illinois, and Marion, Lewis and Lincoln counties in Missouri. In Lawrenceville, Ill., EDS teams are serving emergency responders and residents three meals a day from a fixed feeding site at the Central Christian Church. So far, more that 47,400 meals and snacks have been served. They also are offering emotional and spiritual care.
Salvation Army emergency disaster services vehicles (canteens) have been deployed to feed sandbaggers in Quincy, Lawrenceville and York, Ill., as well as Hannibal, Mo. Two hundred kits containing personal hygiene items have been distributed, and The Salvation Army is distributing bottled water in response to contaminated water supply due to flooding.
An EDS team responded in Ludington, Mich., this weekend providing food and hydration to emergency responders after water levels near the Hamlin Dam rose two feet higher than normal. The Salvation Army is prepared to support residents from Lower Tamarack, a town near Hamlin Lake, which is under several feet of water and was evacuated over the weekend.
Monetary donations may be sent to your local Salvation Army earmarked "Disaster Relief," made online at www.salvationarmyusa.org or by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY.

Salvation Army Program Recognized for Recycling Efforts
After years of being overwhelmed by garbage dumped along with the donated goods sold in local Salvation Army Thrift Stores, a recycling plan was implemented at the Anchorage Adult Rehabilitation Program. As a result of this enormous effort, the program was recently honored at the 2007 Business Recycler of the Year by the Alaskans for Litter Prevention and Recycling (ALPAR) at their annual banquet. Under the direction of Majors John & Katherine Reed, and Assistant Administrator, David McDaniel, items now being recycled include books, shoes, clothing, cardboard, glassware, toner cartridges, metal and computer/electronic goods. In the past year, more than 1,172 tons of goods were recycled.
More importantly, the recycling program has been an integral part of developing a financial base to support the Army’s life-transforming ministry through the Adult Rehabilitation Program.

Transformed Treasures Help Salvation Army Transform Lives
The Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary Spring Lunch & Auction experienced a significant transformation this year. The results of our first annual Transformed Treasures auction were amazing, with more than $46,000 raised to support local Salvation Army programs! Our special thanks to BP, our major sponsor and supporters including ALPAR, Capital Office Systems, CH2M Hill and Color Art Printing.
Local artists, crafters and designers selected items from local Salvation Army Thrift Stores and were challenged to refashion it into a one of a kind treasure. Some were gently transformed, like the frames that received a new finish to capture the beauty of Betty Atkinson's original art work or the old fashioned wooden rocker restored and repainted with a polar bear motif; other items were completely transformed, including a woll sweater felted into a purse, a whimsical "kitchen dog" sculpture made using old kitchen utensils or the 5 foot tall tulip glass sculpture created from a punch bowl and glass snack plates.
Most importantly, the Transformed Treasures auction provided a wonderful opportunity to share the significant ministry of The Salvation Army in helping to reclaim, recycle and redeem the lives of countless Alaskans each year.
