Emergency Relief by Mindanao division in Iligan and Cagayan de Oro
Late Friday night the storm hit the coast with wind and heavy rain. People - most of them unprepared - were caught in their homes sleeping while 180 mm of rain triggered flashfloods and mudslides. The death tolls is expected to pass more than 1000 - making this to one of the worst catastrophes to hit the Philippines.
During the storm our local corps in Iligan was flooded up to the gutter. Our local leaders had to evacuate under difficult circumstances to a neighbor two-storey building and are safe. Most of our local soldiers and members are also in one way or another struck by this catastrophe.
The Salvation Army are now heavily involved in distributing essential help to more than 5000 families in Cagayan and Iligan. Due to rapid response from The International Headquarters in London our local staff is able to provide food, water, sleeping-mats, and blankets. But still the need for more help is obvious. We will now together with local authorities assess what our next steps will be. It is obvious that we will continue out emergency operation for quite a while. To do the best we can we need support - you can participate by giving your donation to our operation!

The Salvation Army Philippine Territory Website
The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.
The advance of The Salvation Army in The Philippines came at the initiative of Filipinos who had been converted through contact with the Army in Hawaii and then returned to their homeland. During the period 1933-37 they commenced meetings in Panay, Luzon, Cebu and Mindanao Islands. In June 1937 Colonel and Mrs Alfred Lindvall officially inaugurated this widespread work.
