Nutrition and Gardening

NUTRITION AND GARDENING TRAINING
SATARA AND PUNE DIVISIONS IN MAHARASHTRA

A workshop was held to train the trainers at divisional level. Among women there is a
high mortality rate of the newborn and also of the mother. Women learnt the importance
of good nutrition and simple kitchen gardening. This can help bring about good prenatal
and postnatal health care. They also learned that gardening can provide income not only
for the families but also for the women's development work through home league
programmes.

Simple gardening tools and seeds were provided. Early preparation included cleaning
and locating the place suitable for gardening. The women also planted some plants and
trees.

The simple act of helping women in need through gardening programmes helped the
women understand the teachings of Jesus. Many of his parables are based on plants, trees,
nature and seed.

Talking about faith, Jesus asked his disciples to have faith as small as a mustard seed.
Gardening can be simple and ordinary work for many, but with faith and compassion it
can lead women to be of help to other women. This simple way could bring about greater
development of women. It gives opportunities for women to come together for a good
cause and it will help to show God's care for those who are neglected. It will also bring
dignity to the women.
