Honorary Degree

back to 'William Booth'

On 26 June 1907, having returned from a seventeen week tour of Japan, America and Canada, General William Booth (Founder of The Salvation Army), was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law by the University of Oxford. The award was presented by Lord Curzon - former Viceroy of India and Chancellor of Oxford University. The following day, a great welcome home was held in honour of the General at the Royal Albert Hall when he wore his scarlet gown of a D.C.L.for the first and last time in public. Among the distinguished audience was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes.

A rare colour picture of William Booth in his Doctoral gown.
